Product analytics for consumer apps
Datalyze is a product analytics consultancy for consumer apps in social, gaming, content, health and lifestyle. We find where new users drop off in their first session, why they don't come back, and which habits keep them, using Mixpanel, Amplitude or PostHog.
What consumer app founders ask us, again and again
Where do new users drop off in onboarding?
What's usually going onOnboarding is tracked as "started" and "finished", so you can't see which screen or permission prompt loses people.
Why do users leave on day one?
What's usually going onThey never reach the core action. Often it's a value mismatch, bug, or the wrong language.
Why don't users come back after week one?
What's usually going onRetention isn't tied to what users did in their first days, so teams build for users who already left.
What turns a casual user into a daily one?
What's usually going onNobody knows which feature, push or reply brings people back.
Why do iOS, Android and web disagree?
What's usually going onEach platform uses different event names, and one person on two devices counts as two users.
Which users will pay, and when should we ask?
What's usually going onPurchase data sits in Stripe, apart from behaviour, so you have no visibility into what actions/ frequency of actions push a user to purchase.
What we do about each one
- 01Onboarding
Track every onboarding screen
We track each screen, permission prompt and skip on every platform, and build a screen-by-screen funnel. Then we cut or reorder the steps that lose people.
- 02Day 0
Find what breaks the first session
We split Day 0 activation by country, language, device and app version to find the groups that fail, then trace their sessions to the cause.
- 03Retention
Tie retention to first-week behaviour
We build retention cohorts split by what users did in their first sessions, find the actions that predict coming back, and help your team move those actions earlier in the experience.
- 04Habits
Measure which triggers bring users back
We track every feature use, email, and social trigger, so you can see which ones bring people back and which ones drive uninstalls. Then we help design habit loops and measure them.
- 05Tracking
One tracking plan across iOS, Android and web
We write one tracking plan with shared event and property names, check every event on every platform, and set up identity so one person on two devices counts as one user.
- 06Monetisation
Join purchases to behaviour
We bring Stripe or app store purchase data in under the same user ID as your product events, then find the point where engaged users are ready to pay.
Consumer apps we've worked with
GameTree, a social app for gamers, was losing users right after they created an account. We found two causes: content not shown in users' own language, and errors during profile setup. After localising the first-use experience and fixing the errors, Day 0 activation rose 5%.
Read the case studyzeroone users signed up but rarely uploaded artwork. We cut onboarding screens and let users collect before uploading, taking activation from 21% to 55%. Streaks, leaderboards and rewards then lifted engagement 30%, and Week 2 retention rose 15%.

Consumer app analytics questions
Mixpanel, Amplitude or PostHog for a consumer app?
For most consumer apps, Mixpanel or Amplitude. Both are strong at retention cohorts and funnels at high event volumes, and easy for product and growth teams to use. PostHog suits teams that also want warehousing, feature flags and experiments in one tool. At consumer scale, pricing depends on event volume, so we design tracking that answers your questions without logging every tap.
What retention rate is good for a consumer app?
It depends on the category and how often the need comes up. A daily habit app and a monthly shopping app shouldn't be judged on the same curve. The more useful test is whether your retention curve flattens: if Day 30 retention levels off instead of heading to zero, there's a core of users to build on.
How do you find out why users drop off?
We start with a funnel of each step, split by platform, country, app version and acquisition source, to find where and for whom the drop happens. Then we look at what those users did, through session replays or their event history, to see why.
Do you work on mobile apps or only web?
Both. Most of our consumer work is on iOS and Android, often alongside a web app. We write the tracking plan for each platform, review the implementation with your developers, and check every event before sign-off.
Where do most consumer app teams start?
With the first-session funnel, from install to the first core action. It's where most users are lost and where fixes pay back fastest. If your current tracking can't show it, we start with a one to two week audit.
